CALHOUN EMS HELP MAN SEVERELY INJURED ON ATV

A 71-year-old Michigan man received serious injuries Saturday evening when he wrecked his four-wheeler in a remote area near the Ritchie-Wirt County line, between Munday and Hartley Ridge, Brohard.

The man, who was visiting friends in the area, reportedly suffered a back injury, early reports saying he could have sustained a fractured back and shoulder.

He was life-flighted to Charleston Area Medical Center.

Calhoun EMS responded with a three-person crew at 5:22 p.m. and had to walk about three miles to treat the injured man. Deputy Craig Gherke and his wife Janet also responded, the couple was traveling through the area when the incident happened.

Several units from the Smithville VFD responded and cut down a number of trees to allow the chopper to land near the accident scene.

The incident involved a four-and-one-half hour effort by emergency personnel.
