DEFENSE SAYS ECHARD NOT COMPETENT TO STAND TRIAL

Ritchie County prosecutors are fighting for a trial in the case of a man accused of killing his wife. William Echard was arrested in August after police say he shot and killed his wife, Gina, and then shot himself. The defense says Echard is not competent to stand trial, but the prosecutors are now asking for a second psychiatric evaluation. If the judge denies that request, or if a second evaluation comes back with the same result, Echard will be placed in a mental institution. His preliminary hearing has been continued.
