Despite playing without two-way standout Caleb Hart and having a plethora of penalties Calhoun kept its record unblemished with a hard-fought 19-6 win over Parkersburg Catholic Friday night at Mount Zion.

Calhoun got touchdowns from Matt Houchin, Jeff Goodrich and Josh DeWeese in running its record to 4-0 while Catholic dropped to 1-3.

The Red Devils took the opening kickoff and drove down the field with relative ease in a mistake free 14-play, 75-yard drive. Houchin scored from a yard out and Nick Whytsell added the extra point for the 7-0 lead.

After that the Red Devils suffered from penalties and a great pass from Crusader quarterback to John Boelter. A missed extra point attempt left the Red Devils on top 7-6. Prior to the Crusaders? touchdown Calhoun appeared to be poised to take a two-touchdown lead with a first-and-10 at the PCHS? 27. Then penalties struck.

On the aborted three-play series the Red Devils managed 40 yards in penalties and a quarterback sack to be facing a fourth-and-58 situation from deep in its own territory.

Parkersburg Catholic took advantage and quickly scored on a drive with the touchdown coming on a 31-yard pass play.

Although the Red Devils dominated the second half they were unable to put any breathing room between them and PCHS until midway in the fourth quarter.

The 'breathing room' came when Houchin spotted DeWeese in the back of the end zone on a scrambling 14-yard completion.

The botched extra point attempt made it 13-7.

But Calhoun's defense stopped Catholic and a late drive put things away when Goodrich ran it in from 22 yards out with 25 remaining.

Overall Calhoun controlled things with 19 first downs and 341 total yards to six first downs and 162 total yards for the Crusaders.

Goodrich led the way for Calhoun with 28 carries for 165 yards while Houchin was 8-15 for 98 yards and a touchdown.

DeWeese was the leading receiver with five receptions for 50 yards.

One area that plagued the Red Devils was penalties as they were whistled nine times for 80 yards.

Catholic, on the other hand, had three penalties for 15 yards.

Calhoun will try to continue its winning ways next Friday night when it travels to face perennial power Williamstown.
