It was one of those "almosts"

On a damp Monday evening at Red Devil Stadium the Doddridge County Bulldog Jr. Varsity scored two 1st Quarter touchdowns and made them stand up for a 16-12 victory over the Calhoun JV's.

The Bulldogs were unable to move the ball on their 1st possession and punted with Calhoun taking over at its own 30-yardline.

The Red Devils also were stymied by the Doddridge defense, and were forced to punt. Calhoun punter Ben Laughlin's punt was blocked and picked up by a Bulldog who took it into the endzone for the game's first score.

A pass was complete for a 2-point conversion and a Doddridge 8-0 lead at the 6:01 mark of the quarter.

After the score the Bulldogs recovered the ball when it bounced off one of the Red Devils and took over at Calhoun's 45-yard line.

Doddridge took six plays to again hit paydirt, the big play being a 20 yard screen pass to the Red Devil six.

The Bulldog quarterback sneaked the last yard for the touchdown; another pass for the 2-point conversion was good, and the Red Devils were on the short end of a 16-0 score with 3:02 remaining in the 1st Quarter. That would be the last score of the evening for the Bulldogs.

The two teams battled back and forth with neither scoring before the half which ended with the 16-0 Bulldog lead.

Calhoun received the 2nd Half kickoff and took it to the Red Devil 46. Calhoun marched the ball downfield on the ground with Laughlin, Gungle and Stevens carrying the load.

Laughlin ran for 17 yards on a 4th and two, and Stevens got the score on run over the right side from 15 yards out. The conversion attempt was stopped, and the score was 16-6 at the 6:27 mark of the 3rd Quarter.

The Bulldogs fumbled on their first play after the kickoff with Red Devil linebacker Caden Arnold recovering at the Doddridge 44-yard line.

Calhoun moved the ball downfield and got the touchdown on a 19 yard pass from Gungle to Aaron Yoak. The conversion attempt was stopped and the score stood at 16-12 in favor of the Bulldogs with 35 seconds left in the 3rd Quarter.

Calhoun stopped the Bulldogs on their next possession, the big play being a sack by Calhoun tackle Chris Mace on a 3rd down forcing a punt.

The two teams struggled back and forth the rest of the game, neither being able to score and the game ended with the Bulldog win by the score of 16-12.

Nick Stevens and Ben Laughlin led the rushing for the Red Devils with Stevens gaining 80 yards on 14 carries, and Laughlin 32 yards on 13 carries.
