ANOTHER SUSPICIOUS FIRE REPORTED ON NORMAN RIDGE

(08/29/2007)
Another fire has been added to a growing list of suspicious fires in Calhoun during the past few months.

The State Fire Marshal's office in Charleston says a fire on Norman Ridge is under investigation. Lab tests are being performed to confirm the use of an agent.

The Fire Marshal's office is investigating at least seven suspicious fires this year in the county. Three have already been determined to have been started by an arsonist.

The Norman Ridge fire was reported to authorities on July 9th, after owner Eugene Stevens discovered the blaze in his basement, and was able to put it out.

The fire department was not dispatched.

Stevens said he was taking a shower when smoke filled his house, coming from burning furniture in his basement.

"I opened the basement door and black smoke rolled out," he said, indicating that someone broke a window to get into his basement, dousing gasoline on a love seat.

Stevens said the State Police are investigating the incident, saying "There are suspects."
