COUNTY OFFICIALS AND EMPLOYEES SALARIES LISTED

(08/29/2007)
By Bob Weaver

Following an ongoing controversy about county employee's wages, two Orma residents, Kathy Helmick and Janet Hightower, requested salaries and benefits be published in the Calhoun Chronicle and the Hur Herald.

Commission president Rick Sampson told the women that would not be a problem, that such was public information.

County Clerk Richard Kirby has issued the list for publication.

Elected officials salaries are set by the West Virginia Legislature based on county population.

The county pays retirement benefits to the state retirement system, and elected officials and county employees are eligible for either single or family healthcare benefits through PEIA.

Some officials and employees who have health benefits from other sources have opted out of the county benefit.

PEIA health benefits are set by the system, and are generally much lower than private coverage. Blue Cross/Blue Shield predicts private coverage for a family will likely exceed $15,000 a year.

Until recently, most county employees were receiving sub-standard wages, but there is an effort by the commission to bring them up, making some improvement.
