ELIZABETH'S PIONEER DAY WELCOMES REGIONAL VISITORS

(10/03/2007)

Displays, booths and demonstrations circle
the Wirt County courthouse for Pioneer Day

5th Annual Wirt County Pioneer Day will be celebrated today.

The Elizabeth Beauchamp Chapter Daughters of American Pioneers invites everyone to join the fun-filled activities and experience the hospitality of Wirt Countians as they take pride in recreating their heritage.

Vendor and exhibitor booths will line Elizabeth's Court House square. There will be demonstrations of pioneer living, good eats, interesting handmade items and games and activities for children.

Start your day early with a real Chuck Wagon Breakfast prepared over an open fire by the Wirt County Bluegrass-Gospel Music Association. Breakfast will be served from 8 - 10:30 a.m.

Music will be live on stage in the Wesbanco parking lot. Filling the air with bluegrass music will be the Gold Tones, Beal Family, Nell and Bill, Weavers, Tom and Carol Wriston, Country Mix, Calhoun Cousins and New Picture.

Visitors for the first time will see both Union and Confederate Soldiers from the Civil War period. Michael Myers, Sons of Union Veterans, will be displaying artifacts and information. Fred Cornell and the 17 VA Calvary will be camped on the Roberts Store Lot enlisting volunteers and representing the Confederacy.

Tour the Beauchamp-Newman Museum and take time for an old fashioned bowl of real cornbread and beans. The Little Kanawha Hotel will also be giving tours and entertaining visitors. In the Court House the Heavenly Peace Makers Quilters will be displaying their beautiful quilts. Dr. Virginia Gray will giving a presentation entitled, "The War of 1812" in the Commissioner's room.

At 3 p.m. don't miss our first "Pioneer Day Bedlam." This will be an opportunity for your group or business to compete in a bed race down Mulberry Street. Teams will be dressed in Pioneer costumes and the bed rider will be in bedtime attire. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest bed, best costume, and best decorated bed. The entry fee is $10.00 and you can pick-up the application at Elizabeth FoodMart.

Antique car lovers won't want to miss the car show on the high school parking lot. If you have an older vehicle you can register it for prizes or just display it for the enjoyment of the crowd.

You don't want to go home early. The Wirt Volunteer Fire Department will host a Spaghetti Dinner and Mini-Extravaganza from 5-8 p.m. The fire department is selling tickets on several great prizes that will be given away throughout the evening.

A Square Dance-Street Dance on the bank parking lot will close the activities for Pioneer Day.
