CHESAPEAKE ENERGY WILL DRILL WELLS CLOSER TOGETHER

(08/10/2007)
Chesapeake Energy is asking state regulators to allow them to place oil and gas wells much closer than generally allowed, according to Charleston Gazette reporter Ken Ward.

Chesapeake wants to put wells 1,000 feet apart.

State rules require wells be at least 3,000 feet apart.

The move comes after Chesapeake announced the construction of their multi-million dollar headquarters in Charleston.

Ward said the state Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has already approved Chesapeake's proposals for an 800,000-acre area in parts of seven counties.

Environmentalists are concerned about the potential impacts of the well spacing rules.

Chesapeake threatened to leave the state after a $404 million court decision was decided against them, the ruling favored West Virginia royalty owners who said they were being cheated by the gas producers.
