Schools across the state are getting ready to upgrade their safety systems, with funding to start in July.

Calhoun Schools will be receiving about $40,000 to implement a safety plan that is expected to change access to the county's three schools.

During the last school board meeting, board member Cynthia Dale gave a progress report on the safety plan, which includes a school-citizens committee to work on the issue.

School Building Authority Director Mark Anthony Manchin says just walking into school buildings will no longer be allowed.

He says concerns from parents have been steadily rising in the wake of deadly school shootings, like those at Virginia Tech and Columbine High School.

Fifty-two of West Virginia's 55 counties have submitted their school safety audits to the SBA.

The report asked school administrators to list the number of doors at each school and other safety-oriented information.

The next step will be for counties to send actual proposals listing their needs and the SBA will release funds according to merit.
