Preston Virgil McCumbers, Sr., 81 - Burnsville

Preston Virgil McCumbers, Sr., 81, of Burnsville, West Virginia, departed this life April 5, 2007 at his residence, following an extended illness.

He was born April 24,1925 at Nicut, Clahoun County, a son of the late Thomas Andrew and Edna Ernie Hardway McCumbers. He was retired from the Mattress Factory in Parkersburg, and a Baptist by faith.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth McElfresh McCumbers on January 16, 1981 and his second wife, Carol Barton McCumbers on December 14, 2000. Two sons; Preston Virgil McCumbers Jr. on December 12, 1965 and Ronnie Lee McCumbers on October 4, 1952. Two sisters, Thelma Gay (David) Low and Vera Maye Cottrill.

He is survived by his wife Hazel Crites McCumbers of Burnsville, six sons; Thomas of Houston, TX; Charles (Penny) of Clarksburg; James (Valery) of Spencer, Michael of Moundsville, Robert of Mt. Zion, and Mark McCumbers of OH. Seven daughters; Barbara (Johnnie) Green of Parkersburg, Ruth Mitchell (Willard Cottrill) of Sand Fork, Connie McCumbers of CA; Brenda 9Thomas) Smith of Ritchie County, Tammy (James) Bell of Grantsville, Geraldine (Jason) Sessman of Hershey, PA; and Regina McCumbers of Clarksburg. Four step-daughters; Tammie Sue Green of Parkersburg, Betty Jean and Melissa Crites both of Webster Springs, and Drema McCumbers of Mt. Zion. 32 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. One brother Rondle McCumbers of Spencer; two sisters, Edith McCumbers; also of Spencer and Velma Norman of Glenville. Brother-in-law, Haymond Cottrill (Linda) of Glenville, sister-in-law, Kathy West of Spencer. Numerous nephews, nieces, and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 10 at Ellyson Mortuary, with Pastor Bryan Groves officiating. Burial followed in the Messenger Cemetery, Little Ellis, Gilmer County.
