ROANE MAN ARRAIGNED AFTER DAMAGING VET'S MEMORIAL

(03/28/2007)
A Newton, Roane County man who tried to drive through the WV Veterans Memorial at the state capitol, damaging it, was arraigned yesterday in Kanawha County for destruction of property.

Damages to the memorial are about $200,000.

Howard Roland Gentry, 59, drove erratically around the Capitol complex about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, driving up the steps of the Cultural Center, then attempted to drive through a narrow walkway in the middle of the veteran's memorial.

Police, unaware of of the earlier incident, stopped Gentry at the Westmoreland Road exit on Interstate 77, about three miles away, after his car broke down.

Police said Gentry was not drinking, but indicated drugs might be a problem.

He told a Charleston magistrate he was unemployed.
