The curtain rang down on Calhoun's young basketball team Tuesday night when Wirt County scored a 61-50 victory over the Red Devils in a Class A sectional game. Wirt County will now play at Gilmer. Calhoun ends its season with an overall 1-22 mark.

The game was actually close all the way but Wirt was ahead just about all the way.

After the Tigers grabbed the lead at 5-4 Calhoun played catch up the rest of the way and never did, although the Red Devils cut the margin to a point or two on several occasions in the first half.

Wirt took a 13-8 first quarter lead and despite the Red Devils slicing into the margin a few times the Tigers were on top 29-20 at halftime. That nine-point lead came on a three-point shot by Chase Mills at the buzzer after Calhoun had played the last couple of minutes of the quarter with starters Andrew Norman and Josh DeWeese on the bench with foul problems. Norman, who had three personal at halftime, would eventually foul out as would Zach Moore as Calhoun was whistled for 22 fouls and one technical (a wrong number in the scorebook to start the game).

Wirt increased its lead to 12 - 49-37 - at the end of three only to have foul-depleted Calhoun rally in the fourth quarter to outscore the Tigers, 13-12 setting the final margin.

The Tigers placed four players in double figures with Michael Davis leading the way with 19 points. He was especially deadly at the free throw line where he hit nine of 11 shots. Chase Mills had a pair of three-point goals and four of seven free throws to score 17. Jesse Ward was six of seven from the free throw line while scoring all 11 of his points in the second half.

Alex Wilson added 10, nine rebounds and four assists.

For Calhoun Moore led the way with 21 points while adding nine rebounds.

DeWeese played another outstanding game with 17 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, two blocks and an assist despite being saddled with four personal fouls.

Justin Gerwig, who finished the game with four personal, added eight points and a pair of assists while senior Lucas Morford, in his last game as a Red Devil, had three points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Norman did not score but chipped in with four assists and a pair of steals.

Cai Clothier added two for the Red Devils.

Harold McCumbers did not score but had three steals and a rebound.

Greg Norman, Chuck Kendall and Anthony Richards all played but did not score.
