THIRD LIGHTNING STRIKE DOWNS 911 RADIOS - 911 Lines Are Operational

(08/27/2001)
Well, it has happened again. A severe thunderstorm swept across the Mt. Zion ridge Sunday afternoon, with lightning striking Calhoun Control and disabling nearly all the counties radio communications.

911 Dispatcher Fred Waybright said the radio transmitter at Broomstick on the sheriff's frequency (39.98) is the only operational tower in the county. "Other that that, we are struggling," he said. Miller Communications was working on the system, trying to restore communications Sunday night.

Waybright said, unlike the last strike, all telephone lines including 911 are working.

There have been three severe lightning strikes at the Mt. Zion center during the past four months.
