West Virginia's highest paid employee is West Virginia University football coach Rich Rodriguez. He topped the list with more than $1.2 million in compensation last year, or more than ten times over what Gov. Joe Manchin earns at $95,000.

About 640 workers earned six-figure salaries or higher.

State Auditor Glen Gainer III says government should be an open book, so his office has posted the salaries of more than 65,000 state employees on its web site.

Gainer, says he plans to make other public records available online, such as travel invoices.

"There's some more things that some folks won't like," Gainer said. "But if they understand that the citizens are looking, perhaps it will bring a little more accountability in government."
