The Little Kanawha Area Community Foundation (LKACF) recently presented a grant check in the amount of $692 to Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

The grant will be used to purchase new Panacea Tender Plus mattresses for its Long Term Care Unit. These mattresses will help support the needs of the patients and reduce the need for side rails, which recently have been identified nationwide as problems that can result in serious injury or death.

This grant was awarded in the fall of 2006 thanks to a challenge grant successfully completed by LKACF. The challenge grant was awarded to the Foundation by the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation.

The Board of LKACF had to raise $10,000 for its unrestricted grant making fund to obtain $5,000 in matching monies. The $5,000 awarded from the Babcock Foundation was then given out in the form of grants.

The Board of LKACF is currently in its second cycle of the Babcock challenge. The board must raise $10,000 by June 30, 2007, in order to obtain another $5,000 in matching monies which can then be awarded as grants again in the fall of 2007.

Currently, $4,250 has been raised. This is a wonderful opportunity to make grants available again for nonprofit organizations that serve Calhoun and/or Wirt Counties.

Donations for the Babcock challenge can be sent to the LK Area Grantmaking Fund, c/o LKACF, P.O. Box 944, Elizabeth, WV 26143. All donations to LKACF are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
