LADY PIONEERS TOPPLE SHEPHERD RAMS

(02/03/2007)
The Lady Pioneers sealed their 19th Victory Thursday night, defeating Shepherd 73-46.

The final score doesn't accurately reflect first half play as Glenville didn't have the momentum to pull ahead until near the midway point of the first half.

GSC owned the evening in the end, as they took advantage of numerous Ram errors to bring home another WVIAC victory.

The game opened sloppy on both ends, as GSC missed two early shots, committed a turnover, and also was whistled on two fouls. Shepherd scored first, and held the lead by varying margins until the Lady Pioneers evened the score at 8-8.

A Rachel Redick three-pointer gave GSC the lead 11-8 at the 13:20 mark, and the lead would see-saw back and forth until the Lady Pioneers once again tied the score at 12-12 when the Rams sent Rachel Redick to the line.

GSC held the lead throughout the rest of the half and headed to the locker room leading 33-24 going on an 8-0 run. Although the Rams outshot GSC from the floor, they committed 18 turnovers in the first half.

The second half was all GSC as the Lady Pioneers controlled play and took advantage of Shepherd's inability to keep the basketball. The Rams committed 16 more turnovers in the second half, allowing GSC to continue building their lead and go on several scoring runs. The Lady Pioneers held their biggest lead of the game at 72-44, and finished with a final score of 73-46.

Rachel Redick paced the Lady Pioneers in scoring with 16 points, followed closely behind by Casey Taylor with 15. Taylor also contributed 3 rebounds. Karina Kendrick pulled down 8 rebounds to lead the Pioneers on the boards. Melanie Oliver contributed 8 points, Lauren Strong 7, and Kendrick, Donita Adams, and Casey Heller each chipped in 6 points. The Pioneer defense racked up 14 steals and forced the Rams into 34 total turnovers.

The Lady Pioneers (19-2, 10-0) return to action Saturday, February 3rd at Salem.(7-12, 6-5)
