NEW DRUG TESTING PROPOSED FOR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES

(01/31/2007)
A Randolph County lawmaker Senator Clark Barnes has introduced a bill that would randomly test athletes involved in championship events.

The tests would focus on steroids.

Calhoun Schools has a random drug testing policy related to all students who participate in extracurricular activities, including sports.

Barnes says his legislation is based on a New Jersey law. That state currently is the only one in the nation that requires such tests for high school players.

The proposal would require the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission to call for and pay for the tests.

SSAC Executive Director Mike Hayden says at $175 dollars each, the tests would be cost prohibitive.

Senator Barnes says every high school athletic director and coach he's talked to favors the testing plan.
