COACH MIKE STUMP WILL CONTINUE SPORTS DUTIES - Will Retire From Teaching

(01/30/2007)

Calhoun teacher-coach Mike Stump is retiring as a teacher at the end of the school year, submitting his retirement to the Board of Education last week.

But Stump has announced he will be returning to the school to continue his coaching duties, according to athletic director Tim Davis, Stump is being hired part-time.

That's good news for Calhoun High's athletic programs.

His wrestling team has broken school records, won the LKC championship, placed in regionals and in the state.

Many of his wrestlers have risen to the top and set individual records.

Stump wrestled for the Red Devils from 1966-67 through 1969-70 and was an LKC champ in 1970.

He began his coaching at Minnora Elementary School in 1977, and in the 1987-88 season, he started coaching on the varsity level at Calhoun High School.

Winning the school's first regional title in 1997 and the first ever LKC Championship in Calhoun's history in 2002 are special moments, but the achievements have continued.

Stump has said his main focus has been to instill respect, discipline, and positive attitudes in each wrestler.

"Winning and losing doesn't always define a champion," he said, recalling highlights of reaching the top, almost reaching the top and sometimes falling short.

Beyond a long list of records, Stump has also helped coach Red Devil Football for several years.
