FORMER CALHOUN DEPUTY BANDY INDICTED FOR LARCENY - Former Police Chief Not Indicted

(01/03/2007)
A former Calhoun County deputy sheriff was indicated yesterday by a Grand Jury in Grantsville.

Ron Bandy, who resigned from the Calhoun Sheriff's Department in June, 2006, has been charged with eight counts: one count of grand larceny, three counts of burglary, three counts of conspiracy, all felonies, and one misdemeanor count for destruction of property.

The case is related to the alleged taking of property, reportedly at least one gun, belonging to an elderly Big Springs couple who were unable to take care of themselves, placed in Department of Human Services Custody.

The case was brought before the Grand Jury yesterday by special prosecutor Jerry Hough, following an investigation by the West Virginia State Police.

Also charged in the incident is Grantsville resident April McCroskey, who was reportedly dating deputy Bandy at the time the alleged crime occurred.

McCroskey is also being charged with eight counts: one count of grand larceny, three counts of burglary, 3 counts of conspiracy, all felonies, and one misdemeanor count for destruction of property.

Both were "straight indictments," with neither party having been arrested for the alleged offenses.

Bandy was first hired as a deputy sheriff in 2001 by former Sheriff Allen Parsons. He was appointed Chief Deputy by Sheriff Carl Ballengee when he was elected.

Last June, Bandy resigned after prosecutor Matt Minney filed charges against the officer for contempt of court after he failed to appear at hearings.

Bandy, who was off-duty at the time, received serious injuries and was hospitalized after he was accosted in the parking lot of Froggy's Bar at Big Otter in November, 2004. He was also run-over by a car driven by a second man. Both of whom were criminally charged.

A long-awaited indictment against former Grantsville Police Chief Ron Gordon by a special prosecutor from Kanawha County did not happen during yesterday's Grand Jury.

Multiple charges have been filed against Gordon, related to sexual impropriety against women in his custody.

Gordon is currently on home confinement.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt, but rather means that a grand jury found sufficient evidence to warrant a trial.
