INTEREST HIGH IN E-911 DIRECTORS JOB

(12/30/2006)
There is considerable interest in the new E-911 Director's position being created by the Calhoun Commission.

County Clerk Richard Kirby said he received 22 applicants for the $25,000 job during the two week window for submissions.

The new director will not only be in charge of general operations of E-911 in the county, but will be charged with completing E-911 addressing and mapping in the county.

The job is being funded by a E-911 money stream which gives each county funds from a cell phone tax.

Calhoun has been using installments from the fund to complete the new E-911 center at Mt. Zion.

Kanawha County has mainly opposed the funding mechanism, claiming they should receive a bigger cut. They are expected to try and eliminate the funding to the state's 55 counties under the current law.

Calhoun is expected to get a relatively small amount of money from the state, funds leftover after an out-of-state contractor defaulted in completing the state's mapping and addressing needs.

The project is now back in the lap of every county.

The county's 911 Advisory Board is expected to make some recommendations regarding the new director, after which the commission will interview final applicants and make the hire.

The decision will likely be made sometime in January.
