LADY PIONEERS FALL TO WASHBURN 69-57

The No. 5 Washburn Lady Blues picked up a 69-57 win over No. 7 Glenville State in their final game in the Hoop-N-Surf Classic in Hawaii on Wednesday night.

Washburn improved to 9-1 with the win while Glenville State falls to 6-2 overall.

Washburn trailed by as many as five in the first half as the Lady Pioneers built a 15-10 advantage and the teams traded leads five more times in the first half as Washburn took the lead for good on a lay-up by Cindy Keeley at 25-24 before taking a seven-point margin in at halftime at 33-26.

In the second half, Washburn opened on a 13-5 run building a 46-31 lead and stretching it out to a 17-point margin at 52-35 before Glenville State rallied to cut the lead back to 54-46 with 8:10 remaining. Washburn held the Lady Pioneers to one field goal over the next six-plus minutes taking the 12-point win.

The Lady Pioneers managed to convert only 40% of their field goal attempts and 26% of their three-point field goals in the contest. In addition, the Lady Pioneers committed 24 turnovers and were outrebounded 33-30.

Individually, Glenville State was led by Rachel Redick's 22 points. Casey Taylor chipped in with 18 points as the only other double digit scorer for the Lady Pioneers. Both Redick and Taylor added five rebounds each.

The Lady Pioneers will return home for a short Christmas break before traveling to play in the Edinboro Classic on December 28-29, 2006.

Lady Pioneers Lose Heartbreaker, 72-71

Previously unbeaten and #6 nationally ranked Glenville State placed three players in double figures, led by Casey Taylor's 28 points, but it was not enough as Minnesota State-Moorhead gained a 72-71 overtime victory in the Hoop-N-Surf Classic.

Minnesota State-Moorhead moves to 7-4 on the season while the Lady Pioneers fall to 6-1 overall.

The Lady Pioneers rallied from a 12-point second half deficit to tie the score at 66 with a lay up by freshman Melanie Oliver with 24 seconds remaining in regulation. The Pioneers attempt at winning the game in regulation was not to be as a Rachel Redick's jumper missed the mark with :01 remaining.

In overtime, the Lady Pioneers quickly grabbed the lead and led until the Dragon's Katie Walden drained a three-point shot with 1:12 remaining. The Dragons converted three free throws in the last 16 seconds to seal the victory.

In addition to Taylor's 28 points, Rachel Redick chipped in with 16, while Melanie Oliver added 10.

Christy Alltop contributed 9 points on three three-point shots and was pivotal in the Lady Pioneers late second half charge.

Glenville State forced Minnesota State-Moorhead into 27 turnovers, but were out rebounded 50-32 and shot a cool 36% from the floor.
