CALHOUN HAS LOSSES BRAXTON AND TOLSIA - Basketball Updates

Calhoun's season-opening road odyssey continued last week with losses at Braxton and to Tolsia in the Capital City Classic.

On Thursday the Red Devils traveled to Braxton County where they suffered an 82-23 setback then on Friday the Red Devils lost to Class AA second-ranked Tolsia 82-37 at Charleston.

At Braxton the Eagles jumped on the Red Devils early and took a 16-2 lead.

The Braxton defense held Calhoun to six points in the second quarter for a 36-8 lead at halftime. The Red Devils picked up the scoring a bit in the second half but still wound up with one of their lowest scoring totals in recent history.

Freshman Zach Moore led Calhoun with 11 points while Dodd added five, Gerwig four and Norman three.

The Red Devils were hampered by foul problems as Moore, Dodd, Norman and Josh Deweese all fouled out.

In the reserve game Braxton jumped out to a 37-0 lead en route to a 78-19 win.

Kyle Keesler led Calhoun with six while Greg Myer, Chuck Kendall and Cai Clothier added three and Anthony Richards two. On Friday the Red Devils played in the noon game of the Capital City Classic against Tolsia and fell victim to another slow starter as Tolsia took a 23-4 first quarter led.

After a slow second quarter, the Red Devils were outscored 15-7 and trailed 38-11 at intermission; the Red Devils kicked the offense up a notch in the second half.

Norman led the Red Devils with 12 points while Deweese added 10 and Moore nine. Moore also had 15 rebounds and five assists for Calhoun. The Red Devils' road trek continues Tuesday night at Doddridge.

Calhoun will continue on the road Thursday at Parkersburg Catholic then travel to Clarksburg for the Notre Dame Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Calhoun will meet host Notre Dame Friday night before playing either Williamstown or Webster County Saturday before taking a holiday break. The Red Devils will return to action at home against Wirt County on Jan. 4, 2007.
