For two quarters Calhoun's inexperienced team played with great aplomb. But for two quarters the Red Devils played like the inexperienced players they are.

The result?

A 62-37 Roane County win over Calhoun.

The Raiders also won the junior varsity game by a 77-24 score. Roane started out like a house on fire and Calhoun didn't play like the fire department as the Raiders rolled to a 16-2 first quarter lead.

As a matter of fact the Red Devils trailed 9-0 before Josh Deweese hit a field goal. It was the first points of the game for the 6-3 junior who went ahead to have a very respectable 19 points and 14 rebounds.

The Red Devils came alive in the second quarter and stayed close to the Raiders, letting Roane hold only a one-point 17-16 advantage. Calhoun outscored the Raiders 14-12 in the third quarter making it 45-32 heading into the final period.

The Red Devils moved within 11 points on a Deweese basket early in the fourth quarter and had the ball back following a missed shot by the Raiders.

But a turnover by the Red Devils seemed to let the mercury out of the bottle and the Raiders pulled away.

Zach Moore backed Deweese with six points and 11 rebounds while Justin Gerwig added five and Jacob Dodd four.

Andrew Norman did not score but added nine rebounds and three steals for Calhoun.

In the junior varsity game the Red Devils went with an extremely inexperienced lineup and it showed as Roane scored the first 16 points and led 22-2 after the first quarter, as Calhoun never threatened.

Greg Myers led the Red Devil junior varsity in scoring with five points. He was backed by Chuck Kendall with five, Anthony Richards and Justin Gerwig with four apiece and Harold McCumbers with three.

McCumbers and Cai Clothier led the Red Devils with 10 rebounds apiece while Kendall added seven rebounds and three steals.

Calhoun, now 0-1, returns to action Thursday at Braxton, 1-0, and then plays powerful Tolsia in the Capital City Classic Friday at 12:15 p.m.
