Maxine H. Smith, 88 - Newton

Maxine H. Smith, 88, of Newton, West Virginia, died Saturday, December 9, 2006, in the Roane General Hospital, Spencer.

Maxine was born September 7, 1918, at Uler, Roane County, a daughter of the late French and Lucy Jarvis Harold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ord C. Smith; two sisters, Gay Butcher and Geneva Lloyd; two brothers, Cluster "Jake" Harold and Clode Harold.

She was a cook at the Elana School, Elana and a former deputy assessor in Roane County. Also, she was a member of the Uler United Methodist Church, Uler.

Survivors include five children, Rita Boyle of Salisbury, NC, Ray Smith and Kay Randall both of Willoughby, OH, Roger Smith and Diane Mayne both of Spencer; one sister, Berdeal Fisher of Chesapeake, VA; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, December 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the Harold Cemetery, Uler, with the Rev. Kenneth E. Truman officiating. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Harold Cemetery, c/o Edith Jarvis, P.O. Box 751, Newton, WV 25266.

John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, is in charge of arrangements.
