Officials in Roane County have confirmed two deaths in an early morning fire on Clay Road (Rt. 36), south of Spencer. A male and female have been removed from the debris, their bodies have been taken to the State Medical Examiner's office for positive identification.

Reports indicated three other individuals narrowly escaped from the mobile home.

The names of the deceased have yet to be released, pending notification of next of kin.

The Spencer-Roane VFD responded to the mobile home fire at 2:45 a.m., after a caller from the dwelling reported the blaze. A 911 dispatcher said he could hear smoke detectors going off, then the phone went dead.

Firemen reported the mobile home was fully engulfed when they arrived.

Firemen had to lay hose lines across
bridge and up hillside to reach blaze

Access to the fire was difficult, the dwelling is located across a bridge on which fire trucks could not travel. Firemen laid about 500 feet of hose to get to the fire.

Firemen shuttled water tankers through the early morning hours.
