INVESTIGATION CONTINUES IN DEATH OF CALHOUN CHILD

Child killed in collision

A 23-month-old Arnoldsburg girl was killed in an auto accident east of Spencer Friday night.

Samantha Dawn Pearson was riding in an infant car seat behind the driver, police said.

The car seat was not properly fastened, according to Sgt. Doug Eldridge of the Roane Sheriff's Dept.

The car crossed the center line and was involved in a collision with a pickup truck. Eldridge said the seat came loose and the child was killed upon impact.

The car was driven by a 16-year-old relative, Gary May. The child's mother, Kimberly Tanner, 23, was a passenger along with two other family members, Merissa May and Delta May, both 11. All of the occupants of the vehicle were from Arnoldsburg.

Eldridge said the 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier was headed east when May was momentarily distracted and lost control.

"He said he looked up and saw he was on the wrong side of the road," Eldridge said. "He said he tried to cut back across the road."

The car crossed the center line and collided with a westbound 1999 Ford Ranger driven by Adam Neal Helmick, 21, of Orma.

The accident occurred around 8:15 p.m. on U.S. 33/119, Eldridge said, in a straight stretch of highway 6/10ths of a mile east of Slate Run Road.

Eldridge said evidence at the scene showed May crossed the center line and hit the other vehicle before coming back across the road. The car then went off the right side of the road and over an embankment before coming to rest in a ditch or small stream...
