BIG ROOT BRUSH FIRE SPREADS QUICKLY - Power Lines Down Big Bend Area

(11/10/2006)

3 PM - A brush fire quickly spread from Rt. 5 at the intersection of Big Root this afternoon, covering several acres.

The Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department responded at 1 p.m.

The fire, fanned by a small wind, burned from the main highway to the top of the mountain, and was still burning two hours after the initial call.

The Wirt County and Smithville VFDs were called to the scene for assistance.

Firemen were able to control the fire near the highway with water lines.

In what appeared to be an unrelated incident, a tree downed several stretches of power lines about one-half mile west of the brush fire.

Electric service was disrupted to that part of the county.

Power crews are on scene.

Power lines are down near Carroll Road on Rt. 5
