MURPHY GETS 11 YEARS IN CLAY SHERIFF BOMBING CASE

(11/09/2006)
A Clay County man, Samuel Murphy, 37, is going to federal prison for 11 years after admitting he tried to blow up the Clay sheriff with a homemade bomb.

Federal Judge John Copenhaver sentenced Murphy, after he plead guilty to several charges this August.

Murphy admitted he was upset with Sheriff Randy Holcomb because Holcomb was aggressively investigating meth labs in the county.

The bomb was built and a call was placed to the sheriff's office reporting a meth lab in a wooded area near the Town of Clay.

The explosive device went off before the sheriff got there when two men were hunting items to recycle in the area.

One of the men received injuries when the bomb went off.

Murphy will be placed on three years probation after his 11-year prison term.
