LONGTIME GLENVILLE STATE PRESIDENT HEFLIN HAS DIED

The former president of Glenville State College and WVU, Dr. Harry B. Heflin, 92, of Morgantown has died.

Heflin was considered a role model for a number of educators in West Virginia and throughout the country, described as a scholar and a gentleman.

Born in Pennsboro, he attended Glenville State College where he graduated with honors in 1937. He was awarded a scholarship to George Peabody College in Nashville, where the masters degree was awarded in 1938. During the summer of 1939, work was taken at the doctoral level at Ohio State University. A fellowship was awarded at the University of Pittsburgh in 1940 and a Ph.D. was conferred in 1942. Concord College conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws in 1965 and West Virginia University a Doctor of Laws degree in 1978.

Dr. Heflin taught in the public schools of West Virginia from 1934 to 1937. From 1938 to 1943 he taught in North Carolina before entering military service in WWII, serving on the Admirals Staff of the U.S. Naval Air Training Command, U.S.N.R., leaving the service as a lieutenant.

After briefly teaching at Marshall, he served as president of Glenville State College from 1947 to 1964, after which he went to WVU.

Heflin was appointed the 18th President of West Virginia University in 1981 and was later named president emeritus.

He is survived by his wife, Dora Morgan Heflin; and one son, Dr. B. Morgan Heflin, a retired orthodontist in Columbus, Ohio. He has two grandsons, Dr. Michael B. Heflin and wife, Lisa, and Dr. Gregory S. Heflin and wife, Gina. He has five great-grandchildren, Alex, Judy, Marisa, Harrison and Malaya, all living in Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by a brother, Brooks and a sister, Gertrude Jackson.

Friends may call from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown. The body will be moved and lie in state from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 503 High St., Morgantown, with Dr. Ken A. Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. Wednesday the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in St. Marys.
