ALLEGED ELIZABETH ARSONIST PLEADS NOT GUILTY

(09/30/2006)
Jerod Evans, 19, Elizabeth, pled not guilty to a 17-count indictment in Wirt County Circuit Court yesterday. His trial has been scheduled for December.

Evans and Willie Trembly Jr., 19, of Elizabeth, were arrested in connection with the arson of the 120-year-old Roberts Store, and other structures that burned in June.

The men allegedly set fire to the store to cover up a break-in.

Evans was charged by a grand jury for breaking and entering Roberts' Store and petit larceny, in addition to a charge for first-degree arson to the parsonage of the Elizabeth UM Church.

He was also charged with seven counts of second-degree arson related to several businesses, in addition to causing injury during an arson related crime. Two firefighters were injured.

Evans could be facing up to 20 years in jail.

Trembly has already been arraigned and also pled not guilty to a multitude of charges.

Evans is still being held in jail with bond at $290,000.
