ATV DEATH RECORD CLIMBS

(09/18/2006)
A 38-year-old man from Deep Water in Fayette County is the 47th person to die in an ATV accident this year in WV.

Thomas Lee Perez, 38, died when his four-wheeler went off the road Saturday evening, according to police.

The state's total last year, the nation's highest, was 40.

Perez's body was found near his ATV after apparently running over a hillside.

State legislators are focusing on better education as a solution to the high number of deaths, with few suggesting that their decision to allow them on hard surfaced roads is a problem, mixing them with regular auto traffic.

The vehicles were designed for off-road use.
