An elderly Grantsville woman perished when fire destroyed her small four-room house this afternoon on Hathaway Street on the town's south side.

Her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Neighbors said the woman returned to her house about two hours before the fire was discovered at 2:48 p.m. She had lived by herself for a number of years.

"I looked out and saw smoke coming out of the house and called 911," said a neighbor across the street.

Grantsville firemen were on the scene quickly, bringing the blaze under control, and discovering the woman's body inside the house a short time after their arrival.

She reportedly wrapped herself in a blanket in an effort to escape the fire.

Grantsville Fire Chief Craig Gherke said the State Fire Marshal is expected to arrive at the scene.

County Coroner Ed Messenger was at the scene, with Grantsville Police Chief J. D. Nicholson, Sheriff Carl Ballengee, Deputy Craig Gherke, Deputy Justin Metheney, and officer Bob Groves.
