The Calhoun Middle School football team traveled to Spencer on Thursday evening as it spent its second week in a row on the road.

The Red Devils saw some improvement from the first week of the season at Doddridge, but still came up on the short end of a 22-6 score.

The game began with Calhoun kicking off to the Yellowjackets who brought the kickoff back to the CMS 48-yard line.

Spencer then needed only nine plays, all on the ground, to reach the Calhoun end zone. The two-point conversion attempt was good, and the Yellowjackets led 8-0 with 3:33 left in the 1st Quarter.

Calhoun's 1st series began after the kickoff at its own 26 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, tailback Ben Laughlin took the ball off the left side of the line for 15 yards and a Red Devil 1st down at the 41.

However the SMS defense stiffened and held the Red Devils to minus yardage on the next three plays, forcing a Corey Metz punt to the SMS 35-yard line.

Spencer threw two incomplete passes sandwiched around two penalties before breaking its tailback up the middle for an apparent 1st down, but the ball carrier fumbled as he was tackled from behind by Caden Arnold, and the Red Devils' Justin Yoak fell on the ball at the 50-yard line.

The Red Devils could not move the ball and were forced to punt on their first play of the second quarter. On its second play of the series, the Yellowjackets tailback scampered 38 yards to the CMS 15-yard line.

Two plays later, Spencer would score on a 13 yard run and a 14-0 lead. The conversion was no good.

The teams exchanged turnovers on the next two series, Spencer picking off a Calhoun pass, and then fumbling the ball back to the Red Devils at the Calhoun 12-yard line; Dylan Mefford covered the fumble.

Calhoun could not move the ball and punted back to Spencer. On its 1st play from the Red Devil 43-yard line, the Yellowjacket wingback took the ball on a reverse for the score; the PAT was good and the score stood at 22-0 at the end of the 1st half.

The teams battled evenly through the 3rd Quarter with neither team scoring. The Red Devils finally got things going as the 4th Quarter began.

Ben Laughlin took the handoff and raced 37 yards to the Spencer 34-yard line. Spencer stiffened on defense and forced a 4th down from the 34 where Ben Laughlin completed a halfback pass to Tyler Bennett who took the ball and outraced everyone for the Red Devil score.

The two-point conversion was no good, and the score was Spencer 22, Calhoun 6.

Calhoun attempted an onside kick, but was unsuccessful, and Spencer ran out the clock for the 22-6 victory.

Calhoun remains on the road next Thursday at Gilmer County before getting back to the friendly confines of Red Devil Stadium.
