Easy game. Lopsided win. But, oh, those penalties.

Calhoun scored early and often and dominated both sides of the field enroute to a 42-6 victory over Doddridge in the Red Devils' home opener Friday night.

Calhoun superlatives:

Jeff Goodrich had 155 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Nick Whytsell scored 16 points on a touchdown, two field goals and four extra points.

Matt Houchin rushed for 72 yards and passed for 79 more.

Caleb Hart had 102 yards.

Roman Rader had a 12-yard touchdown. And Eddie Burrows scored on a yard run.

The defense, led by Zac Yeager, Steven Wagoner and Hart punished Doddridge offensive players with jarring tackles, including several sacks. As a matter of fact the Red Devils held Doddridge to 17 yards total offense and five first downs. The Bulldogs' lone score came with no time left on the clock in the fourth quarter when Ronnie Hass scored on a 12-yard pass against the Red Devil reserves. Doddridge opted to not try the extra point.

On offense Calhoun had 355 total yards and 24 first downs.

All in all the Red Devils looked great in running their record to 3-0.

So what's the problem?

Penalties are the problem ... lots and lots of penalties.

Overall the Red Devils were whistled for 16 penalties for 116 yards. Those penalties kept Doddridge drives alive - the scoring drive for instance - and killed Calhoun drives. Penalties probably negated 50 yards or more of Red Devil offense.

If the Red Devils eliminated the penalties the score could have just as easily have been 50-0 and the total yards would have eclipsed the 400-yard mark.

Calhoun, now 3-0, is idle until next Saturday afternoon when it takes on Parkersburg Catholic at Stadium Field in Parkersburg. With the 3-0 record Calhoun should be ranked in the top 16 Class A schools with a rating of 7.0.

Doddridge, now 0-3, is at Wirt County next Friday.
