CALHOUN HIGH'S ACT SCORES SHOW IMPROVEMENT - College Bound Shortcomings

Calhoun High School's ACT scores have been up and down over the past five years, but showing improvement in 2005-06, according to Director of Curriculum Greg Cartwright.

In 2005-06 students scored a composite score of 19.9, compared to 20.6 in the state. The ACT scoring improved over 2004-05 score of 18.3.

Between 40-50 Calhoun High students haven taken the ACT during the past five years.

Calhoun students have yet to reach the state average on the ACT the past five years.

The testing did show shortcomings in being college-ready in English composition, college algebra, college social science and college biology.

The test indicated that 10% of Calhoun High students were college-ready in those subjects. The state average was 16%.

State Superintendent of Schools Steve Paine said "Our students need to take more rigorous courses embedded in 21st century skills in order to compete with their counterparts globally."

Paine, after a trip to China, is on-board looking at how education can meet demands of a global society and economy.
