Gale Hathaway, 83 - Spencer

Gale Hathaway, 83, of Spencer, W.Va., died Sept. 3, 2006, at the Roane General Hospital, Spencer, after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 5, 1922, in Calhoun County, W.Va., a son of the late Oscar "Bunt" and Leodie Bennett Hathaway. He graduated from Calhoun County High School and was retired from Monongahela Power Co. with 36 years of service, was an active member of the Speed United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked at Goodyear Aircraft in Akron, Ohio, at the beginning of World War II and was a fan of many sports, especially WVU football.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia K. Davis Hathaway; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Lawrence Newlon of Greensburg, Pa.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Linda Hathaway of Williamstown; three granddaughters, Terri Hathaway Welch and her husband, Kevin, of Vincent, Ohio, Laura Newlon Elliott and her husband, the Rev. Phillip T. of Smithfield, Pa., and Amy Newlon Bundy and her husband, Matthew T. of Vienna, Va.; one grandson, Barry Hathaway and his wife, Maxie, of Suffolk, Va.; six great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Gale was preceded in death by three sisters, Veta "Pete" Linville, Glena Vannoy and Zelda "Tag" Siers; and two brothers, Roma and Lewis "Jake" Hathaway.

Services will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer. Visitation will be two hours prior to services at the funeral home.
