GRANTSVILLE POLICE CRUISER WRECKED - Chief Teare Uninjured

(07/31/2006)
Grantsville Police Chief Harry Teare was uninjured when the town's police cruiser collided with a dump truck in a sharp turn Saturday near the Lewis-Gilmer County line.

Mayor Wilbert Kerby said "We're grateful the chief was not injured," indicating the cruiser was likely totaled. "He was taken to the hospital to be checked," the mayor said.

Kerby said the accident happened when Teare was returning to work in Grantsville early Saturday morning to meet with a magistrate, after being on the job a few hours earlier investigating a breaking and entering in south Grantsville.

State Police investigated the collision and did not issue citations.

Kerby said the chief had his permission and the permission of the council to use the cruiser.

Teare has been responding to a number of problem calls in south Grantsville during the past several weeks.

Several Grantsville citizens appeared at a recent council meeting to complain about their neighbors causing problems in south Grantsville.

Kerby said the chief will be on-duty today and police coverage will continue in the town.
