FORMER GRANTSVILLE POLICE CHIEF FACING SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES - Arraignment Scheduled In Grantsville

(07/30/2006)
Former Grantsville Police Chief Ron Gordon, 56, has been charged with the sexual assault of three females.

Following an investigation which started in February by the WV State Police, Gordon was arrested in Henrico County, Virginia on July 20th, where he was working.

Special Prosecutor Tom Kirk says Gordon waived extradition in Virginia and is being returned to Grantsville to be arraigned this week. Calhoun prosecutor Matt Minney rescused himself from the case because of his previous professional connections with Gordon.

The charges are second degree sexual assault, a charge which indicates "intrusion on another person without their consent." They carry jail sentences of 10-25 years, if Gordon is found guilty.

Court records show an additional charge of "attempt," indicating Gordon was not successful in at least one of the cases.

Gordon was suspended and then removed from his job by Grantsville Mayor Wilbert Kirby as the town's only police officer, while Sheriff Carl Ballengee suspended Gordon as the county's home confinement officer.

The report says a 17-year-old female was allegedly assaulted near Gordon's former residence in Washington district in 1988.

The other two assaults involve women over the age of 21 during 2000 and 2004, according to the State Police.

The complaint implies there are other victims, stating that two of the assault charges brought against Gordon have been lodged by victims number five, identified as "SH," and victim number seven identified as "JP."

Authorities have declined to say if additional charges will be brought against Gordon.

The complaint says the 17-year-old female was visiting the Gordon residence at Orma in 1988 where the alleged assault took place, stating that Gordon had "sexual intercourse" with the female in an abandoned building.

Complainant "SH" was described as victim five. She says Gordon was her Home Confinement Officer, coming to her house in 2000 and requesting a urine sample. Gordon then drove "SH" to his house after which "SH" says he allegedly "grabbed her by the arm and took her to his bedroom," forcing sex upon her.

Complainant "JP," who is described as victim seven, claims Gordon came to her residence in 2004 and forced her to have sex, allegedly telling her that "It would not do any good for her to report this because no one would believe her."

Gordon would have been Grantsville's Chief of Police during this alleged incident.

He was appointed Chief of Police by former mayor Gary Knight, and remained the town's only law enforcement officer during the administration of Neil Blankenship, and served for less than a year under Mayor Kirby.
