MOTIVE UNKNOWN IN TRIPLE RITCHIE COUNTY DEATHS - Mother Kills Self, Two Sons

(07/04/2006)
A Ritchie County woman, reportedly new to the area, apparently killed her two young sons and then took her own life Saturday night.

Her husband, Todd Fink, is a utility-man for Dominion Resources, working out of the Grantsville office and is well-known to local gas company employees.

The family was visiting in Calhoun last Saturday, just before the tragic event.

The family moved to Ritchie last year from Virginia. Tanya Fink was a stay-at-home mother and her husband worked for Dominion.

Early reports indicated he and another son, a sixth grader, might not have been present when the shootings occurred, but authorities now say they were at the dwelling.

Local residents say the victims were Tanya Fink, 30, of Auburn, and her sons, Garrett, 8, and Wyatt, 5.

Shirley Mason taught Garrett Fink in second grade at Smithville Elementary School last year, telling reporters the children were well behaved and well liked by their peers, and their mother appeared to be attentive and loving.

In a Sunday morning news release, State Police Trooper R.E. Richardson and Ritchie County Sheriff's Deputy S. McCullough responded to a double-homicide call at a home in Auburn at about 11 p.m.

Neighbors said the woman and her 8-year-old son were dead when authorities arrived.

Officer Richardson said the younger boy was still alive and was taken by EMS to Berea where he was to be life-flighted. but died before he could be put on the chopper.

"She (mother) loved those kids to death," said bus driver Dean Mason. "That's what made it so devastating."
