CYCLIST FLOWN TO RUBY MEMORIAL - Two Gilmer Co. Accidents Reported

(06/30/2006)
Two motorcycle accidents occurred in the Glenville area Wednesday. A local man suffered only slight injury, while a Massachusetts man's crash required him being flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown for treatment.

Adrian Woodford, 59, of Everett, MA, was traveling through the area with friends. He was trailing the group of riders heading west on Route 33. Woodford lost control of his 2006 Harley V-Rod in the sharp turn past Dawson Farms.

Gilmer County Sheriff Mickey Metz said the victim was coherent and able to talk at the scene.

Woodford apparently wasn't exceeding the speed limit and only slid 15-feet on the roadway.

The motorcycle suffered extensive damage from skidding on the roadway and striking a guardrail.

Friends who stopped by the Gilmer County Courthouse Thursday reported Woodford suffered three broken ribs as well as other injuries, but is doing well.

Roger C. Smith, 41, of Cedarville, escaped serious injury when he was struck by a car at the Rite Aid intersection. Smith was riding a 2003 Kawasaki RT.

Smith was following two cars heading toward Weston, according to Sheriff Metz. The driver of the car, William Newton Cox Jr., address unknown, didn't see Smith and turned left from Route 5 onto 33 & 119 and into the path of the bike.

Neither Smith or the driver sought medical attention. No citations were issued in either accident.
