MASSIVE CLEAN-UP ALONG BRAXTON'S ELK RIVER

(06/24/2006)
A massive cleanup of the Elk River is set for Braxton County, with help from the Department of Environmental Protection.

Lauren Spencer, a Braxton County High School junior, is organizing the cleanup of the Elk beginning Monday, June 26, through July 1.

The cleanup is a collective effort to beautify littered sections of the Elk from the Sutton Dam line to the Clay County line.

REAP-The Next Generation program is providing support of the cleanup. Agency boats, trucks, trailers and other cleanup artillery will be used during the effort.

The Braxton County Commission, along with several other local businesses, are helping sponsor the cleanup.

Last summer, citizens in Clay County organized an unprecedented cleanup effort of the Elk from county line to county line - approximately 46 miles.

"This kind of effort is what the Governor's REAP program is all about," said DEP Cabinet Secretary Stephanie R. Timmermeyer.

"If people want to roll up their sleeves, put on their waders and help us work to make our state shine, we'll do all we can to help and support you," she said.

To volunteer or for more information on the cleanup, contact Lauren Spencer at (304) 364-8116.

For more information on the Governor's REAP-The Next Generation program and how to organize a cleanup in your community, call (304) 926-0440.
