William Gail Powell - St. Albans

William "Bill" Gail Powell, 83, of St. Albans, passed away Friday, June 9, 2006, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Bill was retired from Union Carbide Corp., South Charleston. with 37 years service and also Birch Moving and Storage. He was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church, St. Albans, and a member and past District Governor of the St. Albans Lions Club. He was also a member of St. Albans Jaycees and helped organize St. Albans Little League, which he was a manager of for 17 years and Assistant District Administrator for 20 years. Bill was also a former St. Albans Councilman and former public announcer for St. Albans High School under Coach LeRose. He was a fund raiser for West Virginia University for 36 years.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Lon and May Downs Powell; son, Dale Richard Powell; brothers, Paul, Victor and Rue Powell; and sisters, Virla Poling, Shirley McKown, Lucille Wilmouth, and Emma Neal Montgomery.

He is survived by his wife, Fanna W. Thurston Powell; son, Cledith "Butch" Powell and his wife, Janet, of Vienna; daughter, Diane E. Wolf and her husband, Jeffrey, of Orlando, Fla.; stepson, Steve Whaley and his wife, Judy, of Scott Depot; sisters, Amy Hathaway of Grantsville, Eva Burton of Parkersburg; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 12, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Loretta Isaiah and the Rev. Ross Harrison officiating. Entombment will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, Upper Mausoleum Chapel, St. Albans.
