THE RETURN OF REAP - A Mighty Tire Disposal Amnesty Program

(05/11/2006)
REAP has returned to WV.

WV residents may dispose of up to 10 tires per person this summer with a West Virginia ID, through a tire amnesty program.

Calhoun's program is scheduled for July 13-15 (7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at the highway garage at Mt. Zion.

So far, there is no war against junk cars.

The tires must be off the rims.  Only car and light truck tires 16 inches or less will be accepted.  Haulers and businesses are not allowed to participate.

Over the next several months, tire collection events will be held in each of the 55 counties.  DEP Cabinet Secretary Stephanie R. Timmermeyer hopes that by making the service available statewide, residents will be less likely to contribute to illegal dumps.

"West Virginia has thousands of illegal tire piles and open dumps that are both unsightly and environmental and public health hazards," said Timmermeyer.

"The REAP program is making a significant financial and manpower investment in making sure these tires are disposed of properly.  I encourage everyone who has used tires lying around to bring them in to avoid creating more illegal tire piles," she said.

The events are made possible through Governor Manchin's REAP—The Next Generation initiative within DEP's Division of Land Restoration.

REAP brings together all of the state's cleanup programs to maximize the state's cleanup.

While loading up your old tires, if you happen to see the faint shadow of REAP creator, A. James Manchin, just assume it is his ghost giving you a helping hand.
