INTEREST HIGH IN GRANTSVILLE POLICE JOBS

(04/29/2006)
Interest is high in two openings posted by the town of Grantsville for law enforcement officers.

Mayor Wilbert Kerby said the town has received at least seven applications for two positions, one being the chief and the other being a patrolman.

"The officers will be working 32 hours a week," said Kerby, with interviews being conducted sometime next week.

Kerby said "We hope to have police coverage restored shortly."

The new hires will replace former chief Ron Gordon, who was removed from his position by Mayor Kerby.

Allegations of wrongdoing by Gordon are still under investigation by the WV State Police.

Gordon's attorney, Dennis Curry of Spencer, told the Herald that Gordon is unaware of the nature of an investigation lodged against him.

"Gordon has not been advised of any problems related to his performance, let alone allegations which are being made against him," said Curry, which he says is a violation of the WV Code.

"The rumors, innuendo and allegations leveled against Mr. Gordon have certainly sullied his reputation," said Curry, who was highly critical of the way the issue has been handled.

Mayor Kerby, who first suspended the chief, removed Gordon from his job after Gordon failed to appear at a meeting the mayor said was set to discuss the issues.

Kerby has declined to comment on any issues regarding the Gordon case, which is still under investigation.
