~~ CALHOUN COUNTY COMMISSION ~~

Have you seen this man? If not, he is Kevin Helmick and he's running for Calhoun County Commissioner. Kevin would like the county to know a little about who he is.

Kevin is 27 years old and was born right here in Calhoun County. He lives in Nicut and is the son of Dennis and Catherine Helmick. Dennis is part owner of Helmick Bros. Inc., this company cuts timber and performs maintenance on gas line right of ways. They have been in business for 27 years. Catherine has worked for the Calhoun County Committee on Aging for almost 7 years. Kevin has been employed for his father since the age of 16. He worked during the summer while he was in high school and in college and know works full time.

Kevin graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1998 where he played basketball for the Red Devils throughout school. He attended Glenville State College where he obtained his bachelors degree in Business Management and Administration. Kevin plans on continuing his education by obtaining his master's degree in Business Management and Administration. He has worked personally with his father and uncles Denver and James Helmick, and has acquired what it takes to run a business.

Kevin has helped out with employee payroll for the company. Kevin is also experienced in accounting. He has filed family taxes for many years. Kevin is engaged to Jennifer Cottrell of Stumptown. She is the daughter of Bobby and Rosetta Cottrell. Jennifer is 23 and works at Roane General Hospital as a nurse extern and is currently attending WVUIT in Montgomery to obtain her bachelors degree in nursing. She will graduate in 2007.

Bobby is retired from Burke Parsons and Bowlby and Rose is head of HBC and works at Grantsville Foodland. Kevin and Jennifer were in the process of building a home on Nicut and postponed those plans because of the commitment he wanted to put forth in his campaign.

Kevin would like the people of Calhoun County to know that he will work hard for you if elected as your commissioner. He hopes that with your support he can help do all he can for the future and well being of the residents of Calhoun County, and for the overall protection of his and your county.

For the future of Calhoun County Vote Kevin Helmick May 9,2006 for your new Calhoun County Commissioner!

I am Larry McCallister and am running for re-election to the Calhoun County Commission in order to continue working for the citizens of our county.

One of the Commission's biggest accomplishments over the past few years has been keeping the County in the black-a difficult task due to the low tax base of the County. Due to the cooperative working relationship among the three commissioners, this Commission has also been successful in acquiring programs and/or grants to provide projects such as:

An insurance program which has saved Calhoun County residents more than $8,000 in four months; public water systems; walking track around the Wayne Underwood Athletic field (plans are to apply for funds for a similar track at the Upper West Fork Park); awarded $2,500 to the Upper West Fork Park to replace flood-damaged appliances; provided dumpsters at the Upper West Fork Park for disposal of flood debris; new heating and air conditioning for the old jail building which currently houses several government offices; new windows for the courthouse; new 911 center (with the help of our Delegate and State Senators)

In order to keep Calhoun County in the forefront, a working relationship with State and Regional agencies is essential. To serve the people of Calhoun County in meeting this need, I am actively involved as a member of:

Board of Directors, West Virginia County Commissioners' Association; Legislative Committee; Budget Committee; Board of Directors, Mid Ohio Valley Regional Council; Loan Review Committee; A-95 Review Committee, Chair and Finance Committee; Board of Directors, WorkForce Investment Act Board; Board of Directors, Little Kanawha Area Development Authority.

I will continually work to provide needed services and obtain monies for additional projects for Calhoun County citizens and will greatly appreciate your support. Feel free to contact me at 354-6894 or larrymac@frontiemet.net

~~ CALHOUN COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION ~~

Juanita Berdine, candidate for member of the Calhoun County Board of Education. To give you a brief introduction of myself, I grew up in Calhoun County, living on a farm located between Orma and Arnoldsburg, West Virginia. Attending and belonging to the Orma United Methodist Church and a 10 year member of Orma 4-H Club complemented my rural country lifestyle. Attending elementary school in the county, and graduating from Calhoun County High School certainly gives me an understanding of the background culture and the roll school plays in the lives of persons within the county.

After graduating from high school I attended Glenville State College, receiving an AB Degree in Education. I completed and received a Masters Degree in Education from West Virginia University.

Teaching 30 years in the Wood County school system, Parkersburg, WV, provided me with opportunities to teach elementary, junior high, and senior high school students. I retired and returned to Calhoun County to live. I am married to Robert Berdine, a retired Calhoun County educator. We have two adult sons. At the present time we live and work on the family farm.

My years in the classroom gave me the opportunity to work with administrative personnel, to understand and experience the stress and expectations of the classroom teacher and to have a sincere desire to see children succeed. Being able to listen, analyze the facts before making decisions, and my teaching experience are all qualities I can bring to the position.

Having previously served on the Calhoun County Board of Education, I realize many decisions made by board members are mandated by law. Therefore ones' personal opinion cannot determine the final decision.

Your support in the May election will be greatly appreciated.

My name is Lee Evans and I am running for the Board of Education in Calhoun County. I am for a better education for a better future for all the children of Calhoun County. I support all extra-curricular activities. If you have a problem, I am willing to listen to you and work with you to resolve that problem. I want to be your voice on the Board of Education. I have an inner working knowledge of the board because I served on the board from 1996-1999.

I graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1965. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Glenville State College. I taught in the Calhoun School System and coached wrestling and football. I retired in 1992 for medical reasons.

I am married to Phyllis Evans, a teacher in Calhoun County. We are the parents of Seana Miller, a teacher in Calhoun County and married to Brian Miller, and Brian Evans, a pipefitter. We have two grandchildren, Barrett and Boston Evans.

I would appreciate your support and vote in the election on May 9th.

My name is Sandra (Harris) McCumbers and I am a candidate for The Board of Education. I am a life-long resident of Calhoun County and I live at Grantsville, WV with my husband, Dennis McCumbers, and our son, Jacob McCumbers, who is attending Glenville State College—majoring in Education. We are all graduates of Calhoun High School.

I am employed by Calhoun Banks, where I am a Security/Collection Officer and hold a Bank Operations Diploma. I have been employed there for over 16 years.

I am a 4-H Leader and member of the 4-H Leaders Association, where I have served as President. I belong to the Pleasant Hill CEO"s and serve as Co-Chairman on the Calhoun County Extension Service Committee. I also help with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and have served as a volunteer for school activities.

I am seeking your support for election of The Calhoun Board of Education. If elected I will be able to work with other board members, school improvement councils, as well as other community boards.

I believe education is very important and can say that education is a combination of students, teachers, mentors, staff members, the classroom teaching, sports, other curriculum activities, after school programs, and volunteers. The most important is the students, which are the leaders and educators of tomorrow. Together these make a team and I would like to be part of this team by being elected to The Board of Education. Your votes will be greatly appreciated.

My name is Steve Whited, and I am a candidate for Calhoun County Board of Education. I was raised in Calhoun County, and graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1992 and from West Virginia University in 1996. I have worked at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center since 1996 and have been the Chief Operations Officers for 8 years. I am very active in the community with such things as the Calhoun County Park, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Little League baseball.

I am interested in becoming a Board member because I have two small children and another on the way. For my children and the rest of the county's students, I would like Calhoun Schools to be the best. I believe that parents should lead the way and help teachers and staff promote an education system that teaches our children not only to be the best they can be, but also teaches them civic duties as well.

My wife is a teacher at Pleasant Hill Elementary, and I don't want people to think that I am doing this to benefit her, I don't believe in political gain for yourself. I do believe that teachers are very important persons in children's lives, and administrators, parents, and children must understand that. We must not only promote teachers to be the best they can be, but help teachers by giving them the necessary tools and training they need.

I love my children dearly, and I want them and their peers to have all the opportunities in the world. I don't promise to change things, because I know that many issues are mandated by state and federal guidelines, but I do vow to be conscience of all issues, and do my best for all.

Thank you for your consideration for my candidacy.

My name is Mike Wilson and I am a candidate for the Calhoun County Board of Education from Center District. I am a 1987 graduate of Calhoun County High School and a lifetime resident of Calhoun. I am employed in the county by Triad Resources (formerly Pennzoil) in Richardson. I am the son of Marvin and Betty Wilson of Grantsville and the husband of Jessie Rogers of Arnoldsburg. My wife Jessie and I reside on Pine Creek. I have a daughter, Emily, who is a 1st grade student at Pleasant Hill Elementary.

I want my daughter, along with every other student in the county to have every opportunity possible to them. Because of the strong beliefs I have in our children's education and future, I have chosen to run for the board of education. I will work hard with the other school board members, teachers, bus drivers and general public to make good, honest decisions about our children's future.

I believe we have the best teachers, school facilities, parents, and children in the state. We should be very proud of this and keep focused on the future of our children's education. On May 9th, please vote for me, Mike Wilson, for Board of education. Your vote will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

My name is Carlene Frederick. I am seeking re-election to the Calhoun County Board of Education. I care deeply about quality education for all students, providing appropriate tools and education for professional and service personnel, as well as school board members. I ran for the board the first time in 1994, because I wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of children. I have been working very hard ever since to make that possible. Although there are many mandated state and federal laws and policies that influence board members decision making, I feel I have helped accomplish positive changes. Such as, setting goals and objectives for the board and superintendent, encouraging employees to further their education and increasing parent participation, just to name a few.

I am currently serving as president of our local board and vice president of the State School Board Association, representative to RESA V, and serve on several state committees; the Training Standards Review, Constitution and By-Laws, and the Legislative Committees. Because of the varied experiences I have, I can bring board experience, leadership and knowledge to the board.

I have lived all my life in Calhoun County, married to Dallas Ray Frederick, we have three grown children, Jeff, Nina and Kyle. We also took care of several foster children. Dallas and I and our children all graduated from Calhoun High School. After graduation Dallas went to the Armed Forces and I went to Glenville State College to become a teacher. I never became a teacher because I was offered a Federal Postmaster job, but I never lost my love to teach. I am now a retired Postmaster after 30 years service and am active in community organizations. I am currently an adult advisor to the state sponsored RAZE Program, member of Heads Up, FRN, the Tobacco Prevention Coalition and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. I am a Christian, a member of Pleasant Hill UM Church, where I am an Adult Sunday School teacher, a certified Lay Speaker, Delegate to Annual Conference, and District Conference representative and a member of the United Methodist Women.

I love public education, I love people and listen to concerns and issues and work hard to find solutions that is in the best interest of those concerned whenever possible.

My reputation speaks for itself, I am dedicated to quality education, a hard worker, care about providing the best possible educational opportunities for all children, promote community cooperation and keep up on educational training for myself.

I would appreciate your support so I can serve another term. Thank you.
