HICKS RECEIVES PLEA DEAL IN SPENCER MURDER

(03/25/2006)
A Spencer woman Crystal Hicks, 27, has entered into a plea agreement related to the murder of Daniel Burns. She was the second of three suspects to seek a plea deal in the 2005 murder, according to the Times Record.

Hicks has pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter, a misdemeanor, and felony charges, conspiracy to commit malicious wounding and kidnapping.

She could serve 1-5 years on each felony count.

Her husband, Joey Wayne Hicks, 28, entered a guilty plea last month to voluntary manslaughter, for which he could serve 3-15 years in prison. He also pled to conspiracy to commit a felony, with a prison term of 1-5 years.

After beating Burns, Joey Hicks and Raymond Lee Elswick put Burns in a car and dumped his body in a remote area near Spencer, apparently after continuing to beat him and cutting off his little finger.

The Hicks woman says Burns inappropriately touched her daughter.

Elswick is awaiting trial.
