BUCKY ARTHUR'S HOSPITALIZATION EXTENDED - Charged With Attempted Murder-Wanton Endangerment

(03/10/2006)
"There is a small sliver of his mind that is not as it should be," said Parkersburg attorney Bill Kiger, regarding the psychiatric hospitalization of Annamoriah resident Bucky Dale Arthur, 49.

The court has allowed an extra three month stay.

Arthur has been in William Sharpe Hospital for the past six months following an incident where he walked in the Wood County State Police Barracks wearing two Ruger Redhawk .45-caliber revolvers in a western-style double holster.

Police asked Arthur to remove the guns, but he refused, stating there may be traitors in the building.

He was arrested on charges of attempted murder of a police officer and wanton endangerment in June, 2005.

Kiger said the hospital has said that despite treatment, Arthur has not regained his competency during a six-month improvement period.

Kiger defended his client saying "We need to look beyond the alleged crime...We need to look at what he actually did do. He never committed an act. There was potential, but it did not happen."

Wood Prosecutor Sean Francisco said the maximum time Arthur can be held is the same as the maximum sentence if he were actually convicted of the alleged crimes.

Attempted murder of a police officer and wanton endangerment each carry a sentence of one to five years.

Francisco said after that time it is a civil issue.
