VICTIMS PROTEST "JUSTICE" IN ROANE MURDER CASE

(03/09/2006)
A protest claiming a lack of justice for victims of murders was held yesterday at the Roane County courthouse.

Angela Coon, sister of victim Jason Wayne Coon, claims there is a lack of punishment in Roane murder cases.

About a dozen protesters appeared with Coon after she heard from prosecutor Mark Sergent's secretary that a plea bargain was taking place with an individual that has been accused of killing her brother.

Jason Wayne Coon was killed in October, 2004, after he attempted to intervene on a domestic dispute.

Daniel Kelley was charged in Coon's death.

Joe Mace, whose son was shot and died in 2002, joined the protest, saying the man who allegedly pulled the trigger received no jail time.

"There is a poor track record of convictions here," he said.

At least six murders have happened in Roane during the past three years, according to Sheriff Todd Cole, indicating there have been positive outcomes on most of the cases.

Prosecutor Mark Sergent withdrew from the case yesterday during pretrial hearings, meaning that a new prosecutor will be appointed.
