GRANTSVILLE COUNCIL HAS FULL PLATE

(02/09/2006)
Grantsville's town council has their plate full, trying to repair or improve the town's sewage system, water system and storm drainage system, all having significant problems or needs.

Then there is a problem finding a way to demolish the old town hall complex.

Loretta Stevens, a former member has returned to fill a vacancy on Grantsville's town council.

Council is trying to respond to a recent citation issued to the sewage plant and wide-spread problems related to maintenance of the town's wastewater system.

An engineer firm, Trasher, Inc., has been hired to develop upgrades for the system, with estimated costs of about $2 million.

Mayor Wilbert Kerby said finding funding for such improvements is a real challenge, let alone having to borrow money for the project, the costs then being passed on to customers.

The improvements would include work on the main station and the five lift stations around town.

Other major infra-structure initiatives are on the front burner. A-E Enterprises has been hired for improvements on the water system and Brown Associates have been hired to develop a plan for a storm sewer project.

The Town Hall Building Committee reported to council it was holding a work session to handle grant work and is looking at bidding for demolition of the old town hall complex.

Council members supported an advertising edition of the Calhoun Chronicle, promoting tourism in the county.

Voting will commence on February 14 to renew the long-time levy, the election is scheduled on March 3.
