FIRE CHIEF ASKS FOR HELP REPORTING CONTROLLED BURNS

(02/04/2006)
"Making runs to fires that are unnecessary is sometimes a problem," in Calhoun County, according to Grantsville VFD Chief Dave Johnson, who is also the county's 911 director.

Johnson said the local departments have made several brush fire runs this January to controlled burns, where property owners are generally burning brush.

"Burning brush out of fire season is just fine. Property owners aren't doing anything wrong," Johnson said, adding that January has been a warm month with lots of wind.

The problem is that neighbors see the flames and call 911, unsure of what is really going on.

Johnson said part of a solution is for landowners to call Calhoun Control and let the dispatcher know about the controlled burn.

The number is listed in the phone book 354-9271.

"It's pretty costly running the equipment, besides it ties things up when the equipment and men could be needed elsewhere," concluded Johnson.
